DETAILED TREATMENT LIST
Breast reduction
Procedure- For some patients, the extremely large size of their breasts has created disturbing medical conditions. These conditions may include terrible back pain, posture distortion and can even include trouble with breathing. Breast reduction means removing fat tissue from the breasts, decreasing their volume by doing so. An incision is made around the areola, which is followed by a vertical cut from the nipple down to the crease of the breast. The surgeon then reduces the volume of the breasts by removing fat tissue from the lower part of the breasts. In cases of drastic weight gain or pregnancy, the size of the breasts may become larger again. Breasts may remain sensitive for approximately 2 to 4 weeks after the operation. In most cases, breast reduction creates an sesthetic need for a breast lift. Breast reduction may be performed in only one side in cases where one breast in larger than the other. In these cases, a breast reduction will create the symmetry patients strive for.
Duration- 2.5 hours
Anesthesia- general anesthetic
Hospital Stay- 1 to 2 days
Scar tissue healing period - six to eighteen months.
Risks and side effects - Since during breast reduction surgery most of the milk ducts leading to the nipples are removed, future breast-feeding may not be possible after reduction mammoplasty and contour irregularities may also develop. Physical work/ sports may be resumed two months after the procedure.
Male breast reduction (gynecomastia)
Procedure- The surgoen makes small incisions around the areola (nipple) and at a few other places on the chest. A cannula (which is a small metal tube) is inserted through the incisions and used to suck out fat. Self dissolving sutures are then used to sew the nipple back on and tighten it. If excess skin is present, is may be removed as well. Two to three weeks are required for full recovery, but you’ll be up and about 1-2 days after surgery. It is important that during the first five days after the surgery the patient does not carry out any vigorous activities. Normal activity can be resumed after three weeks.
Duration- 1 to 3 hours
Anesthesia- 1.5 hours
Hospital Stay - may leave the same day.
Risks and side effects - Risks of male breast reduction are: infection, fluid accumulations, injury to the skin, rippling or bagginess of skin, asymmetry, pigment changes (possibly permanent if exposed to the sun), excessive scarring if tissue was cut away and the need for a following procedure to remove addition tissue. Physical work/sports may be resumed after six weeks.
Breast Correction (lift)
Procedure- This procedure is designed to raise and reshape the breasts. Implants arenot used in this procedure. The number of incisions made during this surgery depends on the sagginess of the breasts. If the patient requires only a small-scale lift, a periareolar incision is made. In cases of severe sagging the most common method is to created an „anchor incision”, so called because of its shape. It is comprised of a total of three incisions: first around the areola, second incision is vertical, from the base of the nipple to the bottom of the breast, last incision is just above the crease of the breast. Excess skin in the area can be removed. The nipple is kept intact and attached to underlying connective tissue, nerves and blood supply thus decreasing the chances of loss of sensation to minimum. The breasts inner tissue is reshapened, and a new position for the nipple is set and it is sewn back on.
Duration - from 2 to 3,5 hours
Anesthesia- local or a general anesthetic
Hospital Stay - Over night stay.
Removal of stitches - 10 days after the surgery.
Scar tissue healing period - twelve to eighteen months.
Risks and side effects - As with any operation the risks of infection and reaction to the anesthesia may occur. Bleeding and scarring are other side effects of the procedure. All of the above mentioned can be prevented and minimized with the utmost care and preparation for the operation.
Physical work/sports may be resumed - two months later.
