PLENTY of women now own them and 10,000 who don't will buy a set this year, but I only just had my first close-up, full frontal encounter with a surgically enhanced bosom.

For the past decade it was hard to miss examples of perfectly cupped, gravity-defying moulds attached to wraith-slim bodies on the beach, or before-and-after shots in women's magazines.

But these encounters were poor preparation for a confrontation at close range with two perfectly-proportioned bowls of taut flesh.

Fully dressed, the owner of these impressive orbs appeared a well-endowed connoisseur of quality underclothes - her generous breasts sat beautifully under a fine-knit jumper.

The shock came when she emerged bra-less after removing her jumper - and nothing moved. No jiggling, no goose-bumps, nothing.

It probably cost her most of $10,000 but what this woman bought were certainly not breasts. Breasts are soft and malleable, they wiggle and move.

These creations just sat there, exactly like the chest on a Barbie doll, right down to nipples that somehow blended seamlessly into the surrounding flesh. When she turned around, reached to pull down her jumper and bent over, the profile of her generous handful remained immovable.

They looked like flesh but behaved like plastic.

Future models could be tougher than steel, with surgeons last month saying 3000 of the 10,000 Aussie women likely to undergo a breast enlargement this year might consider implants laced with titanium.

But is a cultural obsession with artificially voluptuous bosoms making women replace perfectly good, natural flesh with creations once seen spilling from the bodices of beer-hall wenches?

On blog sites it seems falsies have greater acceptance among women than men, with some men imploring women not to do it on the grounds they prefer a little of the real thing to a huge fake.

Are fakes under the skin any less fake than the padding girls used in their bras? They don't fall out or come off but everyone knows they're not real.

After the busty leads of Pamela Anderson and the late Anna Nicole Smith, last year 329,000 women had a breast enlargement in the US, where the cosmetic ethics of it have been compared to teenagers getting teeth-straightening braces.

So, in our beauty-obsessed culture perhaps jiggling breasts will become as rare as teenagers with crooked, uneven teeth.
